There will be two contributions by XPrag.de members at the next and 27th edition of Conference of the Student Organisation of Linguistics in Europe (ConSOLE), a conference for young researchers, hosted by the Leibniz-Preis Research Unit for (Experimental) Syntax and Heritage Languages (RUESHeL) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin on February 21st to 23rd 2019.
Claudia Felser, principal investigator of former project L2PronRes, is invited speaker. On 21.02.2019 at 4pm, she will give a talk on “The timing of structure-sensitive constraints during native and non-native sentence comprehension”. A further contribution will be a poster by Emese Bodnár (project FoTeRo, Göttingen) on “Thematic role disambiguation in Hungarian”, which will be presented at the poster session on 22.02.2019.

On April 3-5, 2019 a workshop on “Reasoning, Argumentation and Logic in Natural Language: Experiments and Models” will take place at Bochum University. On May 23-24th, 2019 the workshop “The semantics and pragmatics of gradable adjectives: Integrating perspectives from linguistic theory, psycholinguistics and modeling” will take place at the University of Cologne. On Tuesday, January 8th, XPrag.de member Susanne Fuchs from project PSIMS will give a talk on “Changes and challenges in explaining speech variation: A brief review”, at the University of Potsdam.

Abstract:
In this brief overview I review how our understanding of speech variation has changed over the last decades. I argue that depending on the motivation of the scientific investigations and the theoretical points of view, variation has been discussed with respect to biological, social and communicative factors as well as with respect to the nonlinearities between acoustics, articulation, and perception. Since all of these factors can potentially interact with each other, the core challenges now are to explain the underlying mechanisms, to use appropriate methodologies for the analyses, and to understand how far the underlying mechanisms can be generalized to other speakers or communicative events. I conclude that speech variation is not an obstacle, but rather a rich source that allows us to examine the many facets of language.

International leading experts in the field provide 20 two-week courses and three evening lectures. The school will take place in Berlin from August 5th to August 16th, 2019. It is suitable for advanced students at the Bachelor, Master or PhD level. You can even earn ECTS credits!

We are delighted to announce the 8th biennial Experimental Pragmatics Conference, XPRAG 2019, which will take place at the University of Edinburgh from 19-21 June 2019. XPRAG brings together researchers from linguistics, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience and related fields who work on pragmatic phenomena using experimental methods. Previous XPRAG conferences were held in Cambridge (2005), Berlin (2007), Lyon (2009), Barcelona (2011), Utrecht (2013), Chicago (2015) and Cologne (2017).
The conference will be preceded by a workshop on Interaction and the Evolution of Linguistic Complexity (18 June 2019). The CfP for this workshop will be announced separately.
Call for abstracts
We invite interested researchers to submit abstracts for 20-minute talks (+ 10 minutes of discussion), as well as poster presentations, on any topic related to experimental pragmatics. The submission deadline is 1 February 2019, 11:59 pm in the authors’ time zone. Authors will be notified by mid-March. Abstracts must not exceed two pages in PDF format, including examples and references, with 1 inch margins on all sides and 12 point font size.
